I think of my sketchbooks (whose numbers run into 100's) as the tools of my trade; they provide the reference material for knowing how things are put together, for establishing credibility in terms of conveying 2-dimensional impressions of form and light....

My sketches are both a way of making a record, and a way for understanding how a thing can be described, visually...
